Peter Frampton

By MusicMan on April 22nd, 2008

Peter Frampton was a very good guitar player and singer. He first started out in the band Humble Pie, and he and Steve Marriott had to share the fame of singing. He later released a solo live album that sold 16 million copies world-wide. Click here to listen to his amazing talent at using a talk box.

Tony Iommi

By MusicMan on April 22nd, 2008

Tony Iommi was the well-known guitarist for Black Sabbath. He was instrumental in the face of Heavy Metal in the 70s because not only was he a great guitarist, but he was great even though he had the tips of his middle and ring finger missing. Hopefully, you can find it in your heart to honor a rocker missing two fingertips. Click here to listen to him.

Steve Howe

By Davey on April 15th, 2008

Steve Howe is a virtuoso guitarist and played for a number of years in the band Yes. He is currently recording a studio album with Asia, a band he was part of throughout the 80s, and touring with a Yes tribute band. Some of Yes’s popular hits include “Owner of a Lonely Heart” and “Roundabout.” His solo stuff is very amazing also, and includes a great song called “The Clap.”

Eric Johnson

By Davey on April 15th, 2008

Eric Johnson could be considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time to listeners of rock and roll. The song “Cliffs of Dover” captures the ears of any music listeners. He grew up with the bluesy sounds of Texas, even though his music sounds more structured and softer than blues music.

The Luck of the Irish

By Davey on April 15th, 2008

Irish music is more than just fiddles and drums. In fact, some Irish guitar seems calm and soothing. Pat Kirtley, an Irish finger-picker guitarist, is a perfect example of the other side of Irish guitar. Here is a thirty second clip of his song “Finn MacCool’s Reel.” I couldn’t find any longer song clips on the internet, but hopefully you can get the gist of how amazing he really is.

Martin Barre

By Davey on April 15th, 2008

If you know the band Jethro Tull, you probably associate them with the song “Aqualung” or “Thick as a Brick.” If you associate this with the name Martin Barre, you know your music. Barre is the guitarist for the band Jethro Tull, and has been since 1970. He has done some solo work, but mainly sticks with the vocalist of Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson. Take a listen to some of Tull’s music, you might like it.

Terry Kath, R.I.P.

By Davey on April 15th, 2008

Terry Kath was the guitarist for the band Chicago, and he is a perfect example of the thought “I love that song, but who plays it?” He was never extremely popular, and in fact sometimes it seems hard to recall any of the band members of Chicago. Kath played with Chicago for just a few before he died in 1978. He accidentally shot himself with a handgun, thinking there were no bullets loaded. The riffs he concocted were truly inspirational. The songs “25 or 6 to 4” and “Question 67 and 68” show the true talent behind the guitarist Terry Kath. Chicago is still touring the country, even without the long missed Terry Kath

Beckology

By Davey on April 15th, 2008

The name Jeff Beck is not an unknown name in the ears of rock music lovers. But, I found that his history was quite a mystery to me for quite a long time. He played with guitar legend Jimmy Page, the lead guitarist of Led Zeppelin. So, I would like to share with you some of his music and the biography featured on his website. I didn’t know that Rod Stewart was the singer of his first major band, The Jeff Beck Group… I found that fascinating and hopefully you find something fascinating about him too. His playing is very smooth and bluesy, click here to listen.

Ritchie Blackmore

By Davey on April 15th, 2008

What do you think of when of you hear the band Deep Purple? Do you think of “Smoke on the Water” or “Highway Star?” Well, the guy behind it all is Ritchie Blackmore. He was a very influential part in the movement of heavy metal during the 70s, and so was Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, etc. It is my job to bring to you the unknown guitarists of the world, and Ritchie Blackmore iis only listed as fifty-fifth in the list of 100 greatest guitarists by Rolling Stone. If you didn’t know Ritchie Blackmore before this, maybe you should listen to them with new ears. He is currently touring with the band Blackmore’s Night, which will be covered in another days’ blog.
