Ford made a statement last week that perked ears during a conference held by the company. The company has announced plans to lower the greenhouse gas emissions from their cars by 30 percent. They declared that they hope to do this by the year 2020. Ford began considering this idea in the face of the pressures of the global warming problems and hope to help resolve the issue as best they can by 2020.
The most common hybrids on the market at the moment are the ones that shut off the gas engine when the car is idle so that the electric engine turns on to save gas. While this does in fact save gas, there is an even better car. It is called the full hybrid. Volkswagen and Prius are the known full hybrids. These cars save five times the amount of gas as the other hybrids on the market. So what is the catch? The price is 18 times as steep. While this technology was found for the full hybrid, it is unlikely that the production of these cars will happen any time soon due to the cost.
Chrysler confirmed this week that the Dodge Ram is indeed going to become a hybrid in 2010. While the technology behind hybrids has worked its way into making truck, it has yet to make a full sized, high-volume pickup truck. While they have yet to be made, they are certainly on their way with the GMC Sierra Hybrid truck and the Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid. Those two trucks are coming out some time later this year.
Volvo Trucks have introduced a new model of hybrid truck in Sweden yesterday. This truck, a hybrid using a diesel and an electric engine, recharges the battery through the braking system. Every time someone brakes energy is reproduced to charge the battery. This new truck uses the electric engine up to 20 mph, and then the diesel engine kicks in. The opposite happens when the truck goes idle, or brakes, making the energy to recharge the battery.
